Ben Matthews is NMIT Turfgrass Student of the Year

Ben Matthews, a greenkeeper at Metropolitan Golf Club in the south-west suburbs of Melbourne, has been nominated as the top performing student on Northern
Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s (NMIT) Diploma of Horticulture (Turf) course and has been rewarded with a place on Jacobsen’s Future Turf Managers’ program,
to be held this May in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Jacobsen, the manufacturer of golf course maintenance equipment with plants in the USA and UK, recently committed to a three-year agreement with NMIT to
provide new equipment for use on the five golf courses managed by the Institute.

Included in the agreement is an annual scholarship for the top performing student to travel to America and take part in Jacobsen’s Future Turf Managers’
Programme (FTM). This programme sees similar top performing students from the major US colleges being invited to Jacobsen’s headquarters in Charlotte,
North Carolina for a week-long training, mentoring and networking event.

Mike Foskett, Regional Sales Manager at Jacobsen commented that there is no doubt that Ben will be an excellent Superintendent one day.

“He is an intelligent young man with a strong work ethic and has goals and visions of where his career will take him. Glenn Stuart, his Superintendent
at Metropolitan regards him highly and he should know! He’s a worthy candidate for the Future Turf Managers’ programme.”

James Farmer, Head of Department-Horticulture at Northern Melbourne Institute of Training and Further Education added that Ben has proved to be a
dedicated student, firstly within the Certificate III in Horticulture (Turf) course and then the Diploma of Horticulture (Turf).

“Over this time all of the staff at NMIT has witnessed the dedication he has displayed, learning as much as he could about the Turf Industry through his
training and work opportunities.

“Ben is always determined to put in more than 100% effort to all that he has done whilst attending his courses and the staff could always expect his work
to be of a very high standard. We wish Ben all the success that he deserves and hope to see him in the future managing a high quality venue and encouraging
others to join the Turf industry and strive to succeed in the same manner as him,” Mr Farmer said.
